Whether you are looking to improve your smile or correct a dental imperfection, dental veneers may be the perfect option. This article will look at some of the key factors to consider when choosing dental veneers.

What are dental veneers?

Dental veneers are essentially thin tooth caps placed over your existing teeth and can either be whitened colour matched to your existing teeth.

What is the difference between porcelain veneers and composite veneers?

There are two types of dental veneers available: porcelain and composite.

As the name suggests, porcelain veneers are made of thin shell of porcelain while composite veneers are made from an engineered resin. Both are then affixed over the top of your teeth using a dental adhesive.

Porcelain dental veneers look more like natural teeth than dental veneers made of resin, however they are more expensive than the composite dental veneers.

Is there a difference in durability between the two types of dental veneer?

In general, porcelain veneers, when bonded to a healthy tooth, will be more durable than composite veneers. If cared for correctly, you can expect porcelain veneers to last between 10-15 years whereas a composite veneer may only last between 4-8 years.

If you do damage or chip a porcelain veneer, the whole veneer would need to be replaced where as it may be possible to repair a composite veneer.

How long does it take to fit veneers?

Composite dental veneer placement is typically the quicker of the two options and can be done in one dental visit.

Porcelain veneers on the other hand typically require two visits.  During the first visit, your teeth are prepared, after which a mould is taken and then sent to a lab to prepare the veneers.  In the second visit the veneers are then permanently fixed to your teeth.

How much do dental veneers cost?

Composite dental veneers cost between $200-$600 per tooth whereas porcelain veneers cost between $690-$1650 per tooth.

If you are considering dental veneers, your dentist will help you choose the best type for your needs and will also help you determine if dental veneers are the best option for you. It may be that a dental crown is a better option.
